Required State Standards:
Must be at least 18 years of age at the time of testing
Must possess a high school diploma or GED
Must hold a valid Tennessee driver’s license
Must obtain a Tennessee State EMT License within six months of the hire date and maintain it as a condition of continued employment
Must successfully complete a physical agility course, background check, drug screening, and physical examination
New Hire Testing Process for Firefighter Recruits Includes:
Entry-level written examination
Fitness evaluation through the Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT)
A series of oral interview panels
Examples of Firefighter Duties:
Responds to fire and emergency calls as an active member of a fire company
Lays hose, carries and sets up ladders, and operates firefighting equipment to extinguish fires and perform rescues
Provides first aid and administers CPR
Participates in fire prevention inspections, drills, and training activities
Cleans and maintains fire vehicles, apparatus, and equipment
Maintains fire station facilities and grounds
Operates department non-emergency vehicles and, when required, drives and operates fire apparatus and equipment
Engages in public education programs and community risk reduction events
Participates in departmental physical fitness and workout programs
Completes a minimum of 240 hours of training annually
