Columbia Fire & Rescue: Services and Operations Overview
The Administrative Division of Columbia Fire & Rescue is committed to continuously enhancing the quality of services provided to residents and visitors of Columbia. The department actively evaluates public feedback and monitors community needs to ensure services remain responsive, efficient, and forward-looking.
Fire-Related Emergencies
Columbia Fire & Rescue responds to all fire-related emergencies within the city limits of Columbia. This includes incidents involving structures, vehicles, grass, brush, and any other fires posing a threat to life, property, or the environment. Upon arrival at the scene of a fire, the department follows these operational priorities:
Rescue – Prioritize the safe removal of any individuals threatened by the fire.
Exposure Protection – Protect nearby structures and property to minimize fire spread.
Confinement – Contain the fire to the smallest possible area.
Extinguishment – Once the above priorities are addressed, fully extinguish the fire.
Note: These actions are often conducted simultaneously for maximum effectiveness.
Medical First Response
Columbia Fire & Rescue responds to all life-threatening medical emergencies within city limits. Firefighters are trained and equipped to provide critical, life-saving care, working in close coordination with Maury Regional Emergency Medical Services to ensure comprehensive emergency response.
Heavy Rescue & Vehicle Extrication
The department currently operates two heavy rescue units equipped with advanced hydraulic tools for extrication. While the majority of rescue operations involve vehicle accidents, CFR also responds to complex incidents such as:
Rescues from building rooftops
Entrapments involving industrial machinery
Forced entry to assist unconscious or incapacitated individuals
Hazardous Materials Response
Columbia Fire & Rescue responds to all reported hazardous materials incidents within the city. Trained personnel handle these situations with care to protect public safety and the environment.
Fire Cause & Origin Determination
The department investigates the cause and origin of every fire that occurs within the City of Columbia. These investigations help improve community safety and fire prevention education. CFR also contributes to national safety efforts by identifying defective consumer products and assisting with recall campaigns when applicable.
Arson Investigation
Suspicious fires are investigated by the Fire Prevention Division in collaboration with the Columbia Police Department’s Detective Division. This partnership helps identify and prosecute individuals responsible for arson.
Fire Code Enforcement
Columbia Fire & Rescue’s Fire Prevention Division conducts regular fire code inspections for all occupancies within the city, excluding single-family residences. The division also collaborates with the Columbia Engineering Department to review and approve construction plans for new developments, ensuring compliance with fire safety standards.
Public Education
Columbia Fire & Rescue offers a wide range of public education programs focused on fire and accident prevention. These outreach efforts aim to equip the community with knowledge and skills to stay safe.
