Motor vehicle crashes remain one of the leading causes of death among children in the United States. When properly installed and used, child safety seats can reduce the risk of serious injury or death by up to 71%. However, it is estimated that four out of five car seats are installed incorrectly, which compromises their effectiveness in protecting children during a crash.
Thanks to community partnerships with General Motors and the Maury Regional Healthcare Foundation, Columbia Fire & Rescue offers a car seat inspection and installation program to residents of Maury County. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) certified Child Passenger Safety Technicians provide expert assistance to ensure that child safety seats are correctly installed and ready to protect young passengers. The program includes installation help, child passenger safety education, and, if necessary, replacement of unsafe car seats—all at no cost to families.
