The City of Columbia is pleased to announce that a major transportation improvement project along State Route 99 (Bear Creek Pike) has been included in the Tennessee Department of Transportation’s (TDOT) 10-Year Project Plan through the Statewide Partnership Program (SPP).
The project will improve the Bear Creek Pike (SR-99) corridor from Nashville Highway (SR-6/US-31) to Interstate 65, enhancing roadway safety, improving traffic flow, and supporting reliable connectivity for residents, local businesses, and emergency services. TDOT has committed up to $180 million toward the project, with construction currently anticipated in 2037. The City of Columbia has pledged $1 million annually over a 10-year period, totaling $10 million, to support the project’s funding. Due to the scale and complexity of the project, TDOT will lead project delivery in coordination with the City.
Mayor Chaz Molder said the project reflects a thoughtful and measured approach to addressing Columbia’s transportation needs; “This project reflects a long-term, thoughtful approach to addressing real transportation needs in our community, and we remain focused on improving safety and daily quality of life while preserving what makes Columbia special.”
The Statewide Partnership Program allows local communities to collaborate with TDOT to identify and advance priority transportation improvements. Columbia’s participation helped position the Bear Creek Pike project for inclusion in the state’s long-range plan.
TDOT emphasized the importance of that local partnership in the process; “The City’s SPP submission and financial participation played a critical role in elevating the project for consideration,” said TDOT Commissioner Will Reid.
Vice Mayor Randy McBroom highlighted the corridor’s importance to residents; “This is a roadway many people depend on every day, and these improvements are about making travel even safer and more reliable for our community.”
Ward 5 Council Member Brian McKelvy emphasized the importance of balancing improvements with community character; “I’m excited to see this project moving forward. I’ve heard clearly from my constituents in Ward 5 about the need for safer travel along Bear Creek Pike; this has been a top priority for me since joining the City Council, and this project allows us to address those concerns while remaining mindful of the surrounding area and the people who live there.””
City Manager Tony Massey underscored the City’s ongoing coordination with state partners; “Widening Bear Creek Pike has long been one of City Council’s main Strategic Planning goals. Our financial commitment,  patience, and persistence in continuing to pursue this project for our community has paid off.  It’s a proud day for Columbia.”
Additional details will be provided by TDOT as the project progresses through planning and development. The City of Columbia will continue to share updates and engage with residents throughout the process.
The inclusion of this project in TDOT’s 10-Year Plan reflects a continued partnership between the City and State to address transportation needs while keeping community impact at the forefront.
