Citizens Fire Academy

Untitled4Columbia Fire & Rescue’s Citizens Fire Academy is a free, hands-on learning experience designed for adults age 18 and older who want an inside look at what it takes to serve in the fire service. This six-week program offers a unique opportunity to step into the boots of a firefighter and discover the daily operations, challenges, and teamwork involved in protecting the Columbia community.

Participants will engage in a variety of interactive activities, including live fire demonstrations, vehicle extrication simulations, CPR and AED training, and even a fire scene scenario involving hose deployment, ladders, and search-and-rescue tactics. The academy also includes station tours, equipment overviews, and insights into CFR’s Emergency Management, Fire Marshal, and Training divisions.

Led by Columbia Fire & Rescue personnel, the Citizens Fire Academy highlights the department’s commitment to transparency, education, and community engagement—while offering an unforgettable experience for anyone curious about life in the fire service.

Those wishing to participate must be wiillng to provide a valid photo ID, and may be subject to a criminal background check.

Applications for the 2025 Citizens Fire Academy will be accepted July 15, 2025 - August 4, 2025.
